A very short story.

Old Waterfront - 2

(See Old Waterfront)

John was determined to make this a successful day. Luck had been hard for many years now, as it had been for many in London, but here was an opportunity to turn things around.

He took care to step through the muddy streets, dodging horses and beggars and any other people and things that might dirty his attire - he was dressed in his most valuable clothes, it was important to make an impression today.

He paused a couple steps prior to the curb and looked to his right, sensing somehow that he was about to cut him off.

While a horse and carriage raced past - his intuition was correct - he felt as though he remembered seeing someone in a scenario almost exactly like the moment he was experiencing right now.

Turning further to his right, he scanned down the road and made eye contact with a man leaning against a wall. They stared at each other for a heavy moment.

John dismissed the person, for the moment, and hurried across the street now it was clear. He could see his destination clearly now. The building stood taller than the rest, and certainly had a grandiose air about it. A grand place for an interview which would change his life.

As he walked towards the building, he recalled a very brief conversation with a gruff man. A conversation which had not yet happened.

His senses urged him to cross the road.

This wasn’t the time to get caught up in distractions. There was important business at hand, though he would return after the interview. There was an air of purpose about him, an air of control. It was as if he could anticipate the moments coming.

His luck was changing, this was his opportunity to take charge and change his fate.
