A very short story.

Legacy

The TV repeated the announcement. This was maybe the third or fourth time through now. We had done it, we had reached that point where there was no turning back.

“Is this the end? Is there really nothing we can do?” I was despairing, along with probably a good majority of the planet.

Resigned, my father sighed and looked at my mother, gently taking her hand. “Yes, the end will come soon.”

We kept watching the TV for a while, eventually turning it off. There wasn’t any point in keeping up with the drowning and the burning and the destruction now. It had been going on for years all over the globe, steadily getting worse. Despite efforts of communities to turn things around nothing had made any real difference. We had still passed the tipping point.

“We should have done more, why didn’t we do more!”

My father looked at me. “It was inevitable no matter what we did, so we just continued as we always have.”
