A very short story.

Frustrated

The display hadn’t updated for some time now, as though the computer had frozen. This wasn’t the case, however. The CPU was working hard to compile and optimise millions of lines of code. While it was churning way Sam was scanning through emails and tickets on another screen, assessing whether the issues were high priority or “high priority”. Everything gets logged as such, but things rarely are.

Especially when their system was incomplete and functioning poorly.

“Fuck me,” he breathed, “they really don’t have any idea what’s involved in this do they. Can’t even get their system going properly…”

There were about 200 more of these issues and tickets to go through. The system was meant to be done weeks ago, not for a lack of effort on his part.

He turned the second screen off and looked back at the display for updates on compilation. Nothing yet.

His coffee cup was empty. The sun had set hours ago.

“Time for a change,” he muttered to himself.

He snatched his keys and wallet from his draw and walked towards the door. With his finger on the light switch he took a last look around the space. For a brief moment there was a moment of fleeting nostalgia, but that was soon replaced with fatigue and contempt.

After securing the office he walked down the hallway to the main entrance, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it up as he made his way out.

“Time for a change…”

The burning match caught his eye briefly before he flicked it onto the floor, setting the carpet on fire.

Nobody heard from him again.
