A very short story.

Almost Milestone

Calvin sat at the table and pondered. There was an air of nostalgia in his thoughts, though the overall sentiment was middling. It would tend towards melancholy, and then after minutes of contemplation meander to fondness, depending on where his mind wandered.

Had this time of year really come around again? It wasn’t something that often caused him a mindset like this. Usually there was a sense of accomplishment from the prior months, or perhaps an increased sense of self.

This time around however it wasn’t like that. There had been a lot of firsts this time, and lasts. Some of the more significant and consistent aspects of his life were coming to a close, and even though it was for the better the potential for that change was still a hard thing to come to terms with.

Sixty minutes remained.

And this isn’t even what people might call a significant milestone. That was another two years and sixty minutes away.

The days and weeks and months seemed to be passing at an increasing rate. Was that contributing to the diminishing sense of control he had in his life, if he had even had a decent sense of control?

Calvin pushed his chair back from the table and stood up.

Sighing to himself, then, “I guess we see what happens.”

He looked around the empty apartment as he moved towards the light switch. Everything seemed so foreign to him tonight. The light switch clicked softly as Calvin turned it off, plunging the lounge into darkness.

He walked through to the bedroom and shut the door.
